US Department of Education lays off 1,300 employees, cuts workforce by 50%

The U.S. Department of Education has laid off 1,300 employees, reducing its workforce by nearly 50%. Education Secretary Linda McMahon called it a step toward restoring the education system. An additional 572 employees opted for voluntary resignation. The department will continue overseeing federal aid and student loans while closing offices in major cities.
