Schools under siege: California bills could protect thousands of students from ICE

Date:

California lawmakers have introduced two bills, AB 49 and SB 48, aimed at protecting undocumented students from ICE raids near schools. The bills would restrict federal agents’ access to school properties and prevent local police from assisting ICE within one mile of schools. These measures respond to fears of deportation among immigrant families, reaffirming California’s commitment to providing safe education regardless of immigration status. The legislation could set a precedent for other states grappling with similar challenges.
